Top 5 CNG Cars in India

Owning cars powered by Compressed Natural Gas or CNG is one way of reducing your carbon footprint. India needs eco-friendly cars and car manufacturers have now spoilt us for choice. We get everything from a small car, a hatchback, a compact sedan to even an MPV with an option of CNG. We bring you the top five CNG cars currently in the country.
Tata Nano eMax

CNG was a big no for Tata Motors till about 2012 but then the company took an altogether different direction with HorizonNext and set about carving a new brand image. This saw the birth of the eMax range of vehicles and thanks to this even the cheapest car in the world was available with CNG.
But, in that small a car, where was the space for the CNG tank? Well, Tata packaged the car's CNG system intelligently and there was no loss in luggage space. The company fitted the cylinders under the front seats which do not intrude into passenger or luggage space.
Then there is the sequential gas injection system which is calibrated with an advanced engine management system for smart switching between CNG and petrol. This allows the vehicle to sense when the driver needs more power and thus, automatically shift to petrol mode. Switching between CNG and petrol driving modes on-the-fly is effortless, thanks to a push-button fuel type selector.
With CNG technology, the Nano CNG emax offers a touring range of more than 150km (in CNG), in addition to the existing 375km (in petrol), with a fuel economy figure of 36 km/kg.

Maruti Suzuki Alto 800
Maruti Alto 800
The 800 was an iconic car and the Alto 800 picked up from where the older one left off. The car comes powered by the same F8D 800cc petrol engine which we all know to be fuel efficient. Maruti Suzuki has been known for its CNG prowess and this one too comes with that option.
The Alto 800 with the CNG option makes it one of most value-for-money cars with a low cost of ownership. While the petrol variant returns a fuel economy figure of 22.74km/l while CNG returns a good 30.46km/kg. Maruti Suzuki has been working on a number of ways to enhance the way people drive and says that there is a marginal difference in the power delivery when in CNG mode.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio

Maruti Suzuki Celerio
When Maruti Suzuki launched the Celerio, there was an explosion of bookings because, they had managed to offer a lot in a small car. A few months post that they launched the CNG variant. Called the Celerio Green, the car came with a factory-fitted CNG kit, and returned an impressive 31.79km/kg (claimed) mileage.
Under the hood is the same 1.0-litre KB10 mill that is also found in the regular Celerio. However, with CNG kit, it returns 58bhp, making it about 10bhp less powerful than the regular Celerio. The installed CNG kit is the same MSI patented iGPI system, found on the Maruti WagonR and Ertiga as well.

The CNG variant is called the 1.2 S MT Plus (i-VTEC) and has been tuned for CNG compatibility via optimised suspension, application of CNG specific engine components & specially-prepared wiring harnesses.

Maruti Ertiga CNG

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

The Ertiga with a CNG kit features the 1373cc VVT petrol engine which churns out 81bhp; 12bhp less than when in petrol mode. There are no other changes in the car except for the fact that there is no space for your luggage because of the CNG tank.
The Ertiga boasts of a fuel economy of 16.02 km/l when in petrol mode while CNG returns 22.08km/kg of efficiency. Maruti has managed to pack in a lot in one car and the Ertiga with the CNG is a very good option for day to day traffic conditions.
