Seven-seater Maruti Suzuki Wagon R might arrive in India in 2017

Maruti Suzuki is on a roll and seems to have chalked out its plans to launch a new car in every segment. According to reports, the manufacturer is developing a production version of the seven-seater Wagon R concept vehicle it showcased last year. It is believed that if all goes according to plan then car will be launched in 2017.

The Japnese carmaker is believed to be making changes to the design of the Wagon R hatchback to incorporate the third row of seats while still keeping the length of the car under four metres. This restriction is obviously to avail the excise duty benefits which will help them price the car competitively.

The company is already believed to have started work on the MPV and if we are to go by their recent concept cars and corresponding production models, then a lot of the 7-Seater concept will be retained for the production model. Most importantly while the Current, Wagon R is powered only by petrol engines, this is expected to be available with both petrol and diesel engine options.

A source close to the development said, "Most of the work on the new Wagon R is going on at the Indian R&D facility. The company sees major potential for low-priced seven-seater vehicles especially in the rural market which is today almost a third of its total sales.”

The source added that Maruti Suzuki, along with parent company SMC, Japan has ambitious plans for the Indian market. These include increasing the volume levels to over two million units annually. Such a plan has to be supported with new models as well as product refreshments for existing models."

Maruti Suzuki aims to sell two lakh units of the new model annually and also plans to export the new Wagon R to Indonesia. At present, the company exports the Ertiga to that country through the CKD route and might follow the same procedure for the new Wagon R. The car will go up against the Mahindra Quanto and the upcoming Datsun Go+ when launched in India.
