Tesla's Musk tweets about the 'D,' all-wheel drive rumors swirl

Elon Musk tweet
When Tesla chief Elon Musk tweeted “about time to unveil the D” on Wednesday, the Internet exploded, first with laughter about his phrasing, then with rumors of what it might mean. Today we may have our answer.

A Tesla fan over at the Tesla Motors Club forum spotted a new Model S with a badge reading “P85D.” We know the P85 is for the 85-kWh model, but we didn’t know what the “D” meant until someone took a look at the Paris motor show press guide and read that Tesla was scheduled to reveal the “Model S All Wheel Drive.” What made the discovery even more interesting is that Tesla had no press conference scheduled and was granting no interviews.

Yahoo Autos is guessing the D stands for "dual motor," as in, one motor for the front axle and one motor for the rear. Musk has already said the Model X crossover will have all-wheel drive, meaning the company is working on the technology, so introducing it on its sedan makes sense -- especially to boost sales in the northern states.
